Thank you all for the great replies!

Melanie, you simply must get a Kindle (or some ereader) it unlocks a world of really wonderful books ... you'll find you're reading more and more and more.

Roxanne, I'm thrilled you love the basket! When I started coming up with ideas of what to giveaway I thought the more personal and functional the gift the better! Good luck!

Cheryl, thank you so much for the encouragement!

Kate, the fun of getting older is in remembering the way things were! I agree that at some point, as the price of books levels out we'll see a shift in how writers get their materials to the readers. As far as increasing visibility ... that is the million dollar question! Thanks for your reply!

Thanks for the great post. Of course, you made me feel old because I still remember life before computers, let alone the internet and ereaders. When I first started writing seriously and learning about the industry (approximately 12 years ago) I predicted that eventually most authors would be self-publishing. That's finally starting to happen, but it's very difficult to promote and sell in this atmosphere. I do think that some of the small presses and the agencies that are now formatting and distributing ebooks for their authors are on the right track. But still, finding books I want to read can be tough with so much out there. One big help is the ability to read a sample of a book before buying it - once I find an interesting book I can see whether it's readable. That doesn't solve the problem of finding those books in the first place, though.

As a member of Pump Up Your Book I'm not eligible for this giveaway, but I wanted to stop by and comment on this great post.

You and I have witnessed a lot of the same changes. I'm still trying to convince all my kids that we got along without cell phones just fine. :)

I love indie authors. I've found some wonderful writers by taking a chance on them.

Wishing you the best,

Firstly I dont have an ereader, so that would be cool. 2nd I do love Indie writers. I totally agree that you can read outstanding Indie novels or publishing house novels, and it goes the other way as well. I have read or begun to read boring books from both realms.
Glad you published! Sounds like a good book, I would be afraid of crying the entire way through it..
