I Wish…

Is there a piece of art, or music or writing that you wish you had done or been a part of?
I thought about this recently while talking with a friend who said they wish they could have been involved in the Star Wars movies. That got me thinking, well, me too. Who wouldn’t want to say they had a part in one of the cinematic phenomenons of our time? And then I started thinking about other movies that would have been fun to be a part of, or books I’d written, songs I’d sung, etc., because it IS an amazing feeling to be a part of something truly great and something you are proud of.
Of COURSE our projects are ones that we are happy to be a part of, and it one day, it will be OUR projects that people wish they were a part of, but for now, what is that guitar riff that you wish you had played, or that line you wish you’d written? And no fair saying “Harry Potter” or something that just made a lot of money. You have to pick something that you are passionate about even if not a single dollar was made.
There are a few on my list, but I’ll keep it brief. For music, I’ve got to say I wish I could have done something with Queen, or with David Bowie. I’m not a songwriter or a musician, so I have no clue how I would be involved in a project with them, but they are artists I would have liked to work with. I have worked with an incredibly talented musician, Martin Page, but not in a musical way, more in a marketing kind of way, so who knows. Maybe David Bowie will call. If you’re not familiar with Martin’s work, I strongly encourage you to check him out. Working with Martin has been very rewarding, so I can check that off my list.
For fiction writing though it’s a tough one because it’s such a solitary pursuit. I would have liked to have met Ernest Hemingway, although I don’t think I could have stuck to his eating red onions and drinking red wine for breakfast regiment. When I do that, my writing is nowhere near as good as his.
I could go on and on, but what are some of your ‘dream’ projects or people?

For me, I’d like to have been part of the horror genre revolution back in the 70s and 80 when Stephen King almost single-handedly revived the genre. If I’d started being serious about my writing when I was young, I’d probably be a happy, published author by now.
Then again, the road not taken is one which might’ve led me away from my beloved wife. And then my children wouldn’t be here. And then …

…for me it would’ve been across from Bill Gates and his fantasies’ about how simple all this would be…code to make all these things happen. This is foolhardy! No one should wait to be discovered. Those of us who have projects…must complete them and publish, life is running out!

For me it’s a toss up between Ray Bradbury (he wrote many many episodes of Twilight Zone). I’d have loved to have worked with him on some of those projects . . . OR Gene Roddenberry — to have CREATED Star trek — I merely bow to his greatness!
Of course if I had moved to Maine sooner and attended the University of Maine (my son’s college) . . . Maybe I’d have married Stephen King . . . He’s only a few years older than me. I dream about this often!

Wow, interesting question……as far as art goes, there are so many great masters I would’ve loved to have met, not too many I would’ve wanted to work with as lots of them were nuts – but also because I love science, I would have loved a few lessons with Leonardo and also Raphael. For picture books, would love to have worked with Maurice Sendak, Richard Scarry and Trina Schart Hyman. On the music side, no question RUSH, my absolute favorite and the most brilliant prog rock band of all time! I know a lot about music and play a little guitar, but could never contribute musically – I would’ve loved to do one of their album covers though! One more thing…I’ve always had this fantasy of being in a play of some sort, doesn’t have to be broadway or anything, maybe when I have more time it’ll be one of my hundreds of hobbies! Oh also VR I have my “Artit’s Way” book, so whenever you’re ready….

I forgot, I’d love to work with Neil Gaiman, adult and children’s author – he’s a bit weird, but SO cool!

Oohhhh…all good choices. I could have written a list a mile long, that’s for sure.
Susan, awesome! I’ll shoot you an email and we’ll figure something out.
